In Home Alone, both Kevin McCallister and his six-year-old son, Patrick, are left alone in the McCallister home while their family is out of town. A robber breaks in and tries to steal Kevin’s video camera, but Kevin manages to capture the thief on tape. Distressed, the robber turns to Kevin and Patrick in their sleep and prepares to rob the house. Kevin later uses the tape as leverage, showing the robber how to open the front door and lure him into the house. After forcing the robber to tie Kevin and Patrick up, Kevin calls the police and the robber is arrested. A neighbor and the boy Patrick are eventually convinced by Kevin to believe in his stories, and also thank him for saving their lives.

It's five o'clock on Christmas morning and Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is under the bed, pretending to be asleep. But his parents (Joe Pesci and Denise Richards) know that he is awake. His sister and brother are outside trying to get into the house but they cannot unlock the door. Kevin's family make a desperate attempt to try to wake up Kevin who is fast asleep and begin to play the song "I'm an Old Cowpoke." They are interrupted by the phone and the children answer it, only to be informed that one of the neighbors' dogs is missing. While the children are trying to find the dog, the cat gets out of the house and stalks the children. Kevin tries to scare the cat away but he gets scared by his own voice and begins to cry.
The cat wakes Kevin and he begins to play with the cat. This wakes the dog and she comes to the door. Kevin's family enters the house and tries to explain to Kevin why he is under the bed. Kevin agrees and they leave. However, Kevin does not want to celebrate Christmas, preferring to stay in bed alone. While Kevin is in bed, the owner of the house and his friends enter his room and begin to prepare the tree. They begin to sing Christmas carols to Kevin. They sing "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear," "Silent Night," and "O Little Town of Bethlehem." Kevin pretends to fall asleep but he soon gets up, as the song ends, and runs to the bathroom to tell his mother that they are leaving. The man and his friends leave and after Kevin and his family leave the house, Kevin hides in the closet. The cat finds Kevin in the closet and Kevin shoves the cat away. After the family leaves, Kevin's mother returns with her own dog. She leaves and the dog falls asleep. Kevin remains awake and turns on the television. His mother comes back with some of her stuff and leaves again. Kevin goes into the living room and listens to his mother's tape and he begins to cry again.
